Fitness First the Company

Fitness First was founded in 1991 by Peter Harvey. The first club, located in Silver Spring was founded under the name Fitness World, which of course was eventually changed to Fitness First. Fitness First currently operates 16 locations in Maryland, Virginia and Washington, DC, and is the largest operator of fitness centers in Maryland. Since most of our clubs are in close proximity to one another, members are actually offered several locations for the price of one membership.

Our clubs are trendy, yet down-to-earth, and are spaciously designed to facilitate an enjoyable and productive exercise regimen.

We pride ourselves in having the latest fitness equipment as well as group exercise, cycling, Pilates, yoga, and more. All classes offered at Fitness First are included in your membership. We also offer childcare* in most of our clubs, so bring your kids and take comfort in the fact that our professional staff will take care of your children while you enjoy your work out. At Fitness First, you'll feel welcome, and you will see results.

Mission Statement

Fitness First is committed to building upon its position as a leader in the fitness services industry. Fitness First inspires our members to achieve their fitness goals with the finest fitness equipment, knowledgeable instructors and a safe, fun and friendly atmosphere.

President and CEO

Peter HarveyPeter Harvey, a native Bostonian, managed health clubs in the late 1970's in Massachusetts, Virginia and the Carolinas for European Health Spas, a forerunner in the industry. The difference between then and now, says Harvey, "Is that it used to be, 'Why should I join a club?' Now it's, 'Which one should I join?'

In 1981, Peter left the fitness industry and began a new career in computers,. In 1987 he started a small computer firm in Washington DC, which he subsequently sold in 1991. Excitedly, he returned to the fitness industry, buying a struggling 4500 sq. ft. gym called Aspen Hill Nautilus.

Asked his formula for success, Peter Harvey replied, "Service is the key, and the customer is always right. After all, they pay our salaries. Service doesn't only mean showing someone how to do an arm curl, it means taking an interest and asking them about their day. Members must look forward to their workouts. They want a clean facility where the equipment is maintained and upgraded, the staff is knowledgeable as well as friendly, and the membership rates are low. That's who we are."

Harvey goes on to say, "I believe in being accessible, and I am. Email me and I'll prove it!"
